For coastal driving and main highways a regular SUV with AWD is enough. The 4x4 step-up is justified by route - Theth gravel, Valbona via Komani ferry, the Mount Korab approach, Permet riverbed sections and the Karaburun-Sazan dirt road combine clearance, drivetrain and tyre demands that AWD alone does not always satisfy.

In peak summer Theth is reachable in a higher-clearance regular car, but the gravel descent into the village still favours a 4x4 with 200 mm clearance. Valbona requires the Komani Lake ferry and a final mountain road; a full-size 4WD is the practical choice. In April and November both routes effectively require 4WD.

The Riviera through Llogara is paved switchbacks. A compact or mid-size SUV with AWD covers it comfortably. A full-size 4WD is more vehicle than the route demands but is justified if the same trip continues to Permet or Karaburun-Sazan.
